About Me

Triple-board certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Board of Internal Medicine in general pediatrics, pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition and pediatric transplant hepatology, Dr. John-Paul Berauer joined the team at Valley Children’s Specialty Medical Group in 2023.

Dr. Berauer earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine before going on to complete his residency in pediatrics at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois, where he served as chief resident in his last year. He went on to complete clinical and research fellowships in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition as well as pediatric transplant hepatology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.

Prior to his current role, Dr. Berauer worked at Advocate Medical Group in Illinois. He gained a wealth of specialized pediatric knowledge before also working at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory Children’s Center in Georgia. Additionally, Dr. Berauer worked as an assistant professor at Emory School of Medicine, where he supervised and guided pediatric residents and fellowship trainees specializing in gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition on core curriculum for liver and pancreatic disorders, as well as nutrition and metabolism.

Active in his professional community, Dr. Berauer served as a camp physician volunteer for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America for more than a decade. He is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Gastroenterological Association, American Liver Foundation, American Society of Transplantation, Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, Pediatric Liver Disorders SIG.

Dr. Berauer’s primary research has focused on the study of cholestatic liver diseases in childhood. He has been a sponsored investigator by the Childhood Liver Disease Research Network (ChiLDReN) and pioneered investigations into abnormal ciliary structure and function in the etiopathogenesis of biliary atresia through whole genome sequencing. He has shared his expertise through a number of lectures both in the U.S. and internationally, and his work has been published in various book chapters, abstracts and peer-reviewed journals including Hepatology.
